Sonya Curry Recalls Almost Aborting Stephen Curry in Memoir ‘Fierce Love’
Sonya Curry revealed in her memoir Fierce Love: A Memoir of Family, Faith, and Purpose that she contemplated terminating her pregnancy with Stephen Curry 34 years ago, a deeply personal disclosure she shared as part of her journey through family, motherhood, and faith.
The mother of the Golden State Warriors guard detailed the period in her book and during an appearance on the Bleav Network podcast “Your Mom,” explaining how she faced difficult choices before giving birth to Stephen at age 22. According to her account, she had previously undergone an abortion while in high school and experienced profound hesitation before deciding to carry the pregnancy that brought the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player into the world.
“Writing about it in this book was liberating,” Sonya Curry said during her podcast appearance, noting that she wanted to normalize the emotional complexity of such decisions. “It’s normal to have a hard time talking about it. People needed to know that it’s difficult, but normal.”
According to reporting from the Daily Citizen cited in regional coverage, she recalled sensing spiritual intervention while near a Planned Parenthood clinic, leading her to believe that “God had a plan for this child.” She emphasized that women must be allowed to make their own reproductive choices without facing outside judgment.
“The decision I made to keep him is to be put in parallel with the one during my previous pregnancy,” she stated. “It was destiny. We must not judge those who decide to do it. We must be allowed to make this decision when the time comes.”
Family Support and Memoir Release
The release of Fierce Love explores Sonya Curry’s upbringing in rural Virginia, her marriage to Dell Curry, and her career as an educator who founded the Lake Norman Christian Montessori School in North Carolina. She shares three children with Dell Curry—Stephen, Seth, and Sydel—following their divorce after 33 years of marriage.

Her children publicly endorsed the book and praised her role in their upbringing. Stephen Curry noted in a press statement released by People that his mother has consistently served as “a rock of encouragement, of faith, of discipline, and of gratitude for me and my siblings.”
Seth Curry, a player for the Brooklyn Nets, added that their mother continually challenged them to grow, while their sister Sydel Curry-Lee expressed excitement for readers to understand their family’s story.
Broader Public Engagement
The family has frequently balanced sports excellence with public advocacy. Stephen Curry and his parents have maintained active stances on social and political issues, including Sonya Curry supporting her son’s decision not to visit the White House following the Warriors’ 2017 championship victory. The NBA star has also continued public outreach encouraging civic participation and voting.

Sonya Curry continues her media work as co-host of the podcast Raising Fame while discussing her experiences as an author, educator, and matriarch of a prominent basketball family.
