AS Saint-Étienne cemented their position at the summit of the Ligue 2 table with a convincing 3-1 win over Clermont. The victory follows last week’s 3-0 success against Sochaux at Bonal, establishing an early campaign rhythm for the Verts.
Forward Irvin Cardona opened the scoring in the 41st minute, capitalizing on a backheel assist from Thierno Ballo before beating goalkeeper Guivarch with a placement shot. The strike marked Cardona’s third goal in two matches. Ballo added a second goal for Saint-Étienne in the 54th minute, before Danish newcomer Jakob Breum sealed the result in the 71st minute. Clermont’s Ousmane Diop reduced the deficit late in the match with an 89th-minute goal.
Nantes Suffers Consecutive Defeat Against Laval
FC Nantes experienced a difficult evening, falling 2-1 to Laval for their second straight defeat of the new season. The match was disrupted in the 14th minute by a severe head collision between former Nantes midfielder Francis Coquelin and Laval’s Wilitty Younoussa.
