The 2017 NBA Most Valuable Player shared his decision on social media, reflecting on an illustrious path that began when he was selected fourth overall in the 2008 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics.
“Sometimes you don’t even know when you’ve already watched the end. You had to be there. And now it’s over,” Westbrook wrote in a post featuring a career retrospective video.
An Unprecedented Triple-Double Legacy
Over 18 seasons between 2008 and 2026, Westbrook established himself as one of the most explosive and statistically dominant guards in basketball history. According to league records, he exits the game as the undisputed king of the triple-double, racking up 209 in his career. He surpassed Oscar Robertson’s long-standing benchmark in 2021 and famously averaged a triple-double across a single season four separate times over a five-year span, starting with his historic 42-triple-double campaign during his MVP run.
Beyond his rebounding and playmaking numbers, Westbrook sits fifth on the NBA’s all-time assists list and 14th in all-time scoring with 27,176 points.
