Reds Call Up Outfielder Héctor Rodríguez for Major League Debut

The Cincinnati Reds recalled outfield prospect Héctor Rodríguez for his Major League Baseball debut ahead of Tuesday’s opener against the Athletics. President of baseball operations Nick Krall announced the roster move, which followed a busy trade deadline that sent Nathaniel Lowe to Cleveland and Caleb Ferguson to St. Louis.

Cincinnati’s roster overhaul on trade deadline day reshaped both the major league bench and the upper levels of the farm system. While the front office moved a pair of key pieces in separate deals, the organization opted to keep several veteran players through the end of the season.

The return from Cleveland introduces two fresh names to the organization. Brito, a 24-year-old switch-hitter, made his major league debut this season and batted .176 across 15 games for Cleveland while spending most of his year with Triple-A Columbus, where he posted a .237 batting average with nine home runs and 48 RBIs in 83 games. The Reds assigned Brito to Triple-A Louisville. Meanwhile, 19-year-old right-hander Rivera recorded a 3.06 ERA across 13 games between Cleveland’s rookie-level and single-A affiliates, striking out 70 batters in 48.0 innings, and will report to Single-A Daytona.

“We thought that he has a chance to be a starter in the big leagues. Obviously, he’s 19, but we felt there was upside there.”

Héctor Rodríguez Earns His Major League Call-Up

To fill the roster vacancy created by the Lowe trade, the organization promoted 22-year-old outfield prospect Héctor Rodríguez from Triple-A Louisville. Rodríguez already occupied a 40-man roster spot, making his integration straightforward.

Acquired by Cincinnati at the 2022 trade deadline from the New York Mets in the deal that sent Tyler Naquin away, Rodríguez has developed into one of the system’s premier bats. Baseball America and MLB Pipeline rank him as the club’s number-three prospect, standing behind catcher Alfredo Duno and 2025 first-round pick Steele Hall. While scouting reports point out an aggressive approach that expands the strike zone, his ability to square up fastballs has earned praise across the organization.

Veteran Core Stays Put in Cincinnati

Despite heavy speculation surrounding players on expiring contracts, catcher Tyler Stephenson, starting pitcher Brady Singer, third baseman Eugenio Suárez, and relievers Brock Burke and Pierce Johnson remained with the club past the deadline. Nick Krall explained that market offers did not justify moving the group for the final two months of the campaign.

“We had a lot of conversations about a lot of guys, but at the end of the day, the deals weren’t just there for us. That’s why we moved the guys we did. You would hope that more things would happen, but at this point, they just didn’t.”

Singer, who is scheduled to start Tuesday’s opener against the Athletics, recovered from an early-season blister and injuries caused by batted balls to post a 2.73 ERA over his previous nine starts. Stephenson has similarly rebounded from a slow start, batting .348 with a .992 OPS in 35 games since June 7. The front office ultimately decided that keeping veteran leadership around a younger roster outweighed the return packages available on the market.
