Niclas Füllkrug marked his return to Werder Bremen with an immediate impact, scoring a penalty kick to help secure a comfortable victory in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.
Füllkrug’s Emotional Return to the Weser
Füllkrug previously established himself as a prolific goalscorer and a Germany national team regular during his initial spell at the Weser.
Playing at the Millerntor-Stadion of FC St. Pauli, manager Daniel Thioune deployed three summer arrivals in his starting lineup: Füllkrug, goalkeeper Alexander Schlager, and midfielder Ludovit Reis. Despite a brief delay due to a torn net, Bremen controlled proceedings.
How the Match Unfolded
Midfielder Jens Stage broke the deadlock in the 11th minute with a header, giving the Bundesliga side an early advantage.

Early in the second half, Stage manufactured a clear scoring opportunity by drawing a foul inside the penalty area. Speaking to Sky after the final whistle, Füllkrug offered a candid assessment of his display: “Played badly, scored a goal. That is actually good for a striker,” he said, before emphasizing the emotional weight of his return. “But the most wonderful experience today is seeing the Werder fans again, being there for them. I missed them very much.”
Shortly after converting his penalty, Füllkrug was substituted.
Looking Ahead to the Bundesliga Opener
