ESPN analyst Troy Aikman faces specific NFL broadcasting restrictions for “Monday Night Football” this season after taking on a role as a Miami Dolphins consultant, according to league officials. The parameters mirror those previously imposed on Fox analyst Tom Brady due to his part ownership of the Las Vegas Raiders, ensuring similar compliance measures for prominent media personalities holding ties within the organization.
Broadcasting Restrictions and Production Meeting Protocols
Under the league’s established parameters, Aikman will be required to attend production meetings remotely when his broadcast crew meets with head coaches and key players ahead of games, according to statements provided to Front Office Sports by NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy. Furthermore, the analyst will not be permitted to attend practices at team facilities. The league office confirmed that the framework governing these dual roles remains consistent with the rules applied to Brady over the previous two seasons.
“There have been no issues with Tom over the last two seasons,” McCarthy said in a statement. “It is up to the coaches and clubs what they share with him. If they share information they shouldn’t, then that’s on them. The same parameters that pertained to Tom last season will continue this year and also will apply to Troy.”
Broadcast Scheduling and Direct Interviews
Despite the operational limits placed on facility access and in-person production gatherings, league rules allow Aikman to conduct interviews outside of team facilities. Additionally, the network broadcaster is not prohibited from broadcasting games involving the Miami Dolphins. However, the schedule currently reflects no such conflicts for the upcoming slate.
“The Dolphins are not expected to be very good this year. They’re getting out of cap hell, so there’s no Monday night game with the Dolphins this year,” Aikman stated during the interview, adding that he had previously discussed his role with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and received confirmation that Goodell was “fine with what I’m doing and my role.”
Longstanding Broadcast Partnership
Aikman has been the lead color commentator for “Monday Night Football” alongside Joe Buck since 2022, continuing a professional television partnership that began in 2002.
