NFL Brain Damage Study: At Least 1 in 4 Former Players Suffer from CTE

At least one in four former NFL players suffers from brain degeneration, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal that examines post-mortem brain tissue samples and renews urgent questions about head trauma management in professional football.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, commonly known as CTE, has shadowed American football and the National Football League since the early 2000s. The degenerative brain disease can trigger a series of behavioral symptoms, including aggression, depression, and paranoia, alongside cognitive impairments like severe memory loss. Repeated blows to the head have been repeatedly linked to the condition by prior medical research.

Because CTE can only be definitively diagnosed post-mortem, measuring its exact prevalence within the sport has remained a persistent challenge. To address this gap, researchers analyzed the cases of former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 at various ages. Out of 878 deceased individuals from that cohort, 235 families donated brains for medical examination.

According to the results published in the British Medical Journal, neuropathology related to CTE was confirmed in 24.5% of the players who died. The study’s authors concluded that at least “nearly a quarter of all former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had CTE-related neuropathology at the time of death.”

Medical Experts Weigh In on Underestimation

While the data cannot be directly interpreted as reflecting the exact prevalence of CTE among every living former player, the findings highlight a likely underestimation of the physical and cognitive burden carried by these athletes, according to an editorial written by professors Tobias Kurth and Richard Riley. Neither Kurth nor Riley participated in the research study.

The NFL formally acknowledged the link between football and CTE in 2016. Following that acknowledgment, the league implemented rule changes and risk-mitigation protocols designed to protect players, alongside establishing compensation funds for former athletes dealing with long-term health consequences.
