According to an analysis published in the British Medical Journal, at least one in four former NFL players examined post-mortem suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), highlighting a persistent health crisis tied to professional football. Researchers evaluating the brain tissue of deceased athletes found that 24.5 percent of the subjects showed definitive neuropathological signs of the degenerative brain disease.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, has haunted the National Football League and football since the early 2000s. The condition can trigger severe behavioral and cognitive symptoms, including aggression, depression, paranoia, and memory loss. Multiple studies have linked these outcomes to repetitive head impacts sustained over a player’s career.

Understanding CTE Prevalence Through Post-Mortem Brain Donation

Because CTE can only be definitively diagnosed post-mortem, measuring its exact prevalence among living football players remains a significant challenge.

Out of 878 individuals identified during that timeframe, families donated 235 brains for scientific examination. Laboratory analysis confirmed CTE neuropathology in 24.5 percent of those examined brains. As the study authors concluded, nearly a quarter of the former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 exhibited physical traces of the disease at the time of their deaths.

Expert Analysis and the Debate Over Underestimation

While the study provides concrete data on the donated tissue samples, independent experts emphasize that the findings require careful interpretation. Professors Tobias Kurth and Richard Riley noted in an accompanying editorial that the data cannot be directly interpreted as the exact prevalence rate for the entire population of former professional football players.

However, Kurth and Riley added that the findings point toward a probable underestimation of the heavy medical and psychological burden facing former players. The league itself formally acknowledged the link between football and CTE in 2016, subsequently implementing new safety rules to mitigate head trauma risks and establishing compensation funds for former athletes suffering from long-term neurological damage.
