Porto Defender Brás Arrives on Loan
NEC Nijmegen has moved to address its pressing defensive shortages by securing a deal to sign 22-year-old central defender Gabriel Brás on loan from FC Porto, according to multiple reports from Portuguese and Dutch media outlets. The agreement includes an option for NEC to acquire half of the player’s transfer rights for 1.25 million euros, as reported by regional and national publications.
Brás, a youth international for Portugal, has spent recent seasons featuring primarily for FC Porto B in the country’s second tier. While he has yet to make an official appearance for Porto’s senior team, he participated in pre-season training under head coach Francesco Farioli. With first-team minutes hard to secure in Portugal, the young defender now heads to the Eredivisie to bolster manager Dick Schreuder’s backline.
Filling Gaps in the Backline
The addition comes at a critical juncture for the Nijmegen club, which has been searching extensively for defensive reinforcements. NEC entered the campaign facing notable gaps in the heart of its defense following the departures of Eli Dasa and Ahmetcan Kaplan. Although the club previously brought in Tobias Storm and added Perr Schuurs on a free transfer, Schuurs remains short of match fitness after battling knee issues over the past two years.
Defensive frailties forced Schreuder into improvised tactical setups recently. During a match against Telstar, midfielder Darko Nejasmic started centrally at the back before being substituted at halftime, leaving Jamiro Monteiro and an under-fit Philippe Sandler to fill the gaps. Following a 1-2 defeat to Telstar, Schreuder acknowledged the strain on his squad without detailing day-to-day selection plans, noting publicly that his team’s defensive needs were evident.
European Eligibility Hurdles
Despite completing his move, Brás will not be available immediately for NEC’s crucial upcoming fixtures. Neither Brás nor newly arrived Austrian goalkeeper Nikolas Polster are eligible for the return leg against Olympiakos Piraeus in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. Last week’s opening match between NEC and Olympiakos ended in a scoreless 0-0 draw.
Adding to Schreuder’s immediate selection concerns, Philippe Sandler’s availability for the European clash remains uncertain. Sandler missed Saturday’s fixture against Telstar and missed training sessions due to physical complaints. Schreuder indicated that a final decision regarding Sandler’s fitness would be made on matchday.
Summer Window Final Stretch
Should Brás officially complete the formalities, he will become NEC’s tenth signing of the summer transfer window. Club officials reportedly expect to pursue at least one or two additional defensive options before the window closes. If NEC manages to overcome Olympiakos, the club will advance to the Champions League play-offs to face the winner of the tie between Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and FK Bodø/Glimt. If eliminated, European competition paths will shift accordingly.
