Fifteen Million Watch the Sky Go Dark Across Spain
An estimated 15 million people gathered under virtually cloudless skies between A Coruña on the Atlantic coast and the island of Formentera in the Mediterranean to witness the moon obscure the sun. Spain’s state broadcaster RTVE designated the astronomical event “60 segundos de oro”—or 60 golden seconds.
Windfall for the Depopulated Interior
The total solar eclipse delivered a massive financial windfall to Spain’s sparsely populated interior, often referred to as the “España vaciada.” Calculations by the consulting firm AFI show the event generated 421 million euros in additional economic activity. Roughly 327,000 travelers journeyed specifically to the path of totality, with an estimated 80 percent coming from abroad.
Surging Bookings in Forgotten Inland Towns
Smaller provincial capitals and forgotten inland towns saw international hotel bookings surge by more than 380 percent compared to the previous year, according to AFI. In the village of Sahechores in the province of León, roughly 300 kilometers northwest of Madrid, local business owners experienced unprecedented demand.
Global Travelers Fill Rural Sahechores
Paula Fernández, proprietor of the “Aitalas” restaurant, noted that her establishment booked out for August 12 two years in advance, starting with a 40-person tour group from Japan. Fernández, who also operates a local campsite, stated that she welcomed travelers from the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, and beyond, filling every available pitch.
Sky-High Prices Along the Path of Totality
Travel operators compared the spike in interest to global sports tournaments, though without the host nation infrastructure costs. Along the totality zone stretching from Galicia through Castile and León, Aragon, and Valencia down to the Balearic Islands, accommodation prices soared. Private homeowners rented out rooftop terraces and gardens for prime sky-viewing angles, with sought-after balconies commanding rates of up to 700 euros, according to media reports. Meanwhile, visitors on Mallorca packed restaurants along the west coast and near the shore to catch the celestial phenomenon against the backdrop of the western horizon.
