Corinthians has announced the unexpected departure of Netherlands international Memphis Depay, leaving the 32-year-old forward as a free agent on the transfer market. According to club statements reported by outlets including Voetbal International and Telegraaf, the Brazilian Série A side decided against extending the forward’s contract strictly due to financial constraints rather than sporting reasons.
The sudden turn of events comes as a surprise to supporters and technical staff alike. Just days prior, head coach Fernando Diniz had expressed strong confidence that a new agreement was imminent. However, club leadership ultimately determined that the financial commitments required for a new deal exceeded sustainable operational limits.
Financial Realities Force an Abrupt Exit
In an official announcement, Corinthians explained that the decision required difficult institutional responsibility. “Corinthians has made this decision exclusively with an eye on our financial situation, which demands responsibility,” the club stated, expressing gratitude to Depay and his representatives for their professional conduct throughout negotiations.
