The controversy began when Marcos Llorente uploaded an image of himself wearing specialized eyewear intended for viewing a total solar eclipse. Following widespread social media reaction and commentary across television broadcasts, the midfielder took to his channels to deny claims that he advised his followers to view the celestial event without proper eye safety equipment.
“I find it very funny that some media outlets and television stations are saying things about me that I have never said,” the Atlético Madrid player stated on social media. “I have NEVER said that you have to watch the eclipse without glasses.”

While clarifying his stance on safety equipment, Marcos Llorente maintained his critique regarding the scale of the public information campaign surrounding the astronomical event. He argued that the extensive attention dedicated to the phenomenon served as a diversion from other real-world events.
“What catches my attention (hence my glasses photo) is the colossal hype for weeks that you are giving to the eclipse,” Llorente said, pointing to television programming, government announcements, mobile applications, schedules, maps, distributed glasses, and even dedicated playlists promoted by various institutions.

The Atlético Madrid midfielder explicitly linked the widespread media coverage to concurrent political and social news that he believes were sidelined by the continuous eclipse reporting. In his posts, he questioned the timing of the intense focus amid other developing events.
“And precisely now, with all the things that are happening. Wow!” he wrote, before delivering his most controversial remark: “In the end, it’s the usual thing: bread and circuses. Keeping people entertained, looking the other way.”
To reinforce his position, Llorente adopted an ironic tone regarding how individuals choose to engage with the natural phenomenon. “I don’t care at all if people decide to see it, if they decide not to see it, if they see it with glasses (seven have been recalled, by the way), without glasses, doing a handstand, or exposing their eggs to the eclipse,” he added.
