German long jump star Malaika Mihambo has been forced to prematurely end her season after suffering a thigh injury during a Diamond League meeting in Katowice, according to reports from the German Athletics Association (DLV). The 32-year-old Tokyo Olympic champion sustained the injury during her fifth attempt at the Silesia-Poland competition on Saturday, subsequently requiring hospital treatment.

According to the German Athletics Association, further medical examinations are scheduled to determine the precise severity of the thigh injury. The setback curtails a crucial stretch of late-summer athletics for the Heidelberg-born athlete. Mihambo had registered a mark of 6.60 meters during her first competition following the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, where she finished fifth as the defending champion just six centimeters behind Italian winner Larissa Iapichino. The latest medical evaluation confirms she will miss several high-profile fixtures, including the ISTAF meeting in Berlin scheduled for August 30, the Diamond League final in Brussels on September 4 and 5, and the Ultimate Championships in Budapest running from September 11 to 13.
