At the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, German high diver Maike Halbisch secured the bronze medal in the women’s 20-meter event, according to extensive reports from German media outlets including Augsburger Allgemeine and Der Tagesspiegel. Competing from a scaffolding tower erected on the Pont de Bir-Hakeim against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, the 21-year-old athlete finished with a total score of 292.15 points across four dives.
An Unconventional Interruption on the Platform
During her preparations for a crucial attempt, Halbisch experienced a uniquely urban distraction when a train crossed the bridge directly beside the diving platform. Rather than breaking her concentration in frustration, the German competitor paused her routine to wave at the driver and passengers aboard the passing Metro carriage. “The subway driver waved at me, and then I just waved back—because I’m a nice person,” Halbisch told reporters with a laugh, as reported by Augsburger Allgemeine. Several passengers inside the train waved back before she refocused on her descent.
Climbing the Ranks in the Final Round
Halbisch’s path to the podium required a dramatic surge during the final stages of the competition. At the halfway point of the four-round event, she sat in sixth place. However, she executed what Der Tagesspiegel described as a strong and exceptionally difficult final dive with a high degree of difficulty, which propelled her upward in the final standings. “The high degree of difficulty is worth a lot, especially when the dives go well. But it can also go in the other direction like yesterday, for example,” Halbisch explained regarding her tactical risk-taking.
“I have no words,” the 21-year-old said of her achievement, according to Augsburger Allgemeine. “I would have expected anything, but not this.”
Podium Results and German Standings
The gold medal was captured by Ukraine’s Nelli Chukaniwska, who tallied 324.70 points. Italy’s Elisa Cosetti claimed the silver medal with a score of 297.20 points, leaving Halbisch to round out the podium in third place.
In the broader German team context, fellow high diver Iris Schmidbauer secured a fifth-place finish. Schmidbauer, 31, previously captured the European championship title in the discipline in 2022, highlighting the continued competitive depth of the German high diving squad on the international stage.
