Late Saturday night, the trade that the baseball world had been anticipating or dreading finally materialized when the Detroit Tigers traded Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers for three minor-league prospects. Hysteria and hand-wringing swiftly followed across the sport as the back-to-back World Series champions, already carrying the largest payroll in Major League Baseball, added another elite arm to their rotation.
Skubal learned of the deal in a phone call after returning to the visitor’s clubhouse during the Tigers’ 8-6 win over the Athletics at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California. The left-hander, who was drafted by Detroit in 2017 and developed into a superstar over seven seasons, admitted his emotions were raw.

Inside the Prospect Package Sent to Detroit
While fans outside of Los Angeles focused on the financial might of a franchise that began the season with a $323.3 million opening-day payroll and a $163.7 million luxury tax bill, the actual trade package sent to the Tigers did not cost the Dodgers a single big-league roster piece. Instead, the Detroit Tigers accepted an offer consisting of outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith.
The return brings significant upside to Detroit. Hope, ranked as baseball’s No. 25 prospect by MLB Pipeline, has recorded 23 home runs, 17 doubles, one triple, and 18 stolen bases in 94 games this season. Ryan, a former college shortstop converted into a pitcher, brings a high-octane arm despite an injury history that includes a Tommy John recovery and a recurring hamstring issue.
The trade capital was largely generated through shrewd previous transactions by Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman. Hope arrived in Los Angeles in January 2024 when Friedman traded infielder Michael Busch and reliever Yency Almonte to the Chicago Cubs to clear 40-man roster space. Ryan was acquired from the San Diego Padres in March 2022 in exchange for utility player Matt Beaty.
A Projected Rotation for the Record Books
In Los Angeles, Skubal joins a pitching staff that already led the majors with a 3.36 starting pitcher ERA. Assuming health, the projected starting rotation features Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Skubal, Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell, and Tyler Glasnow. The depth extends further with All-Star Justin Wrobleski, 24-year-old phenom Roki Sasaki, and mid-season acquisition Eric Lauer.
He is slated for free agency after the World Series, and because he was traded mid-season, he is no longer eligible to receive a qualifying offer, giving his upcoming free-agent stock a slight boost. For the remainder of the 2026 season, the cost for the Dodgers to pay Skubal is approximately $9.5 million.
