Leo Neugebauer Edges Out Niklas Kaul to Win Decathlon Gold at 2026 European Championships

German Rivals Clash for Gold in European Decathlon Thriller

At the European Athletics Championships, German decathlete Leo Neugebauer narrowly finished ahead of compatriot Niklas Kaul, overcoming a series of missteps in the pole vault and high jump.

The competition unfolded across two days of multi-event action. According to reports from sports journalists covering the event, Neugebauer entered the evening high jump session holding a lead after a stellar morning session. That lead vanished when the Tokyo world championship medalist faced challenges. When the bar was set at 1.96 meters, Neugebauer committed two consecutive misses, leaving himself a single final attempt to avoid disaster. He cleared 1.99 meters on his last chance, preserving his standing before heavier struggles arrived on the track.

Kaul Mounts a Strong Challenge on Day One

Kaul carved out a contrasting path through the opening day. The 2019 world champion delivered a strong performance in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 11.23 seconds, followed by a 7.22-meter leap in the long jump—where he skipped his third attempt—and a personal best of 15.26 meters in the shot put. Kaul later clocked 47.99 seconds in the 400 meters, marking a season-best and the second-fastest stadium-lap time of his career.

“The 400 meters are rarely pretty, but today it was a lot of fun because I’m in good shape,” Kaul said in an interview. “There are still five events to go and it’s just fun. Even if it were ‘only’ a fourth place, that would be okay.”

Stumbles on the Track Narrow the Standings

Neugebauer experienced his own hurdles during the 400 meters, going out too fast and fading before tumbling across the finish line in 48.81 seconds. Despite that stumble, records show he retained the overall lead with 4483 points at the halfway mark.

Netherlands competitor Jeff Tesselaar and Norway’s Sander Skotheim closed the gap to 71 and 101 points respectively, while Kaul sat in sixth place with 4214 points heading into the second day of competition.

Teammates Push Each Other Toward the Podium

The rivalry between the two German athletes drove the narrative of the event. Track experts noted before the 400-meter race that a direct gold-medal battle between the teammates was developing.

“Niklas and I are competitive types, but that only makes us both better,” Neugebauer noted. The competition resumed with the 110-meter hurdles, with both athletes pressing toward the podium alongside fellow German competitor Amadeus Gräber, who finished the first day in 13th place with 4150 points.
