According to Bild reporting, the transition forms a cornerstone of RTL’s joint sports strategy alongside Sky Deutschland following RTL Group’s acquisition of Sky Deutschland earlier this year. The initial cash payment for the takeover reached 150 million euros, with total valuations potentially climbing up to 527 million euros in subsequent years. For RTL, securing Wontorra represents a marquee acquisition—frequently described in reports as a “Königstransfer”—to bolster its combined sports portfolio. Wontorra’s new agreement is reportedly slated to run for a minimum of three years.
Expanding Free-TV Coverage and Return to Roots
RTL Chief Executive Stephan Schmitter announced plans to broadcast more Bundesliga matches on free television than ever before following the corporate acquisition. Additionally, the DFB-Pokal will air on RTL, including the tournament final for the 2027/28 season. Wontorra previously worked as a reporter for RTL beginning in the 2017/18 season, where she hosted the Monday night Bundesliga show on Nitro.
