The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has formally declared it has no confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino, calling for a restructured global governing body and proposing an international summit in Amsterdam to chart a new course for world football.
According to reports from De Telegraaf and regional outlet Zeelandnet, the Dutch association shared its critical vision with UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin on Sunday. The KNVB’s opposition centers on Infantino’s leadership and a now-retracted commercialization plan that would have sold a portion of World Cup television and marketing rights to third parties.

The KNVB argues that world football needs more than just a change at the top. In its official statement shared with European football authorities, the Dutch governing body questioned the fundamental operational model of world football’s governing body, asking what kind of organization the sport actually requires.
The KNVB answered its own question by stating that football needs “a strong and credible FIFA that belongs to the game, serves its members, and further develops football worldwide,” as cited by Zeelandnet.
The controversy surrounding the current leadership intensified following the disputed commercialization plan for World Cup rights.
UEFA’s Stance and Legal Preparations
The Dutch intervention arrives amid broader European pushback against the FIFA leadership. According to reporting from RTL.nl and De Telegraaf, European football opponents have stepped up pressure, with UEFA launching a direct challenge against Infantino over allegations of self-enrichment and financial misconduct.
Following discussions last week, the European football governing body decided to suspend a previously threatened total boycott of FIFA competitions. However, UEFA simultaneously announced that it is actively preparing criminal proceedings against Infantino, signaling a deepening institutional rift between European federations and the global governing body.
The 2027 Presidential Election Timeline
The next major checkpoint in this leadership battle is set for March 2027, when FIFA members are scheduled to elect a president during the official FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco.
As the timeline stands, candidates wishing to challenge the incumbent must formally submit their bids by November 18. Despite the intensifying legal challenges and sharp criticism from major European federations, no alternative candidate has officially emerged to challenge Infantino ahead of the upcoming deadline.
