The regional archery community in Extremadura is mourning the death of Inés Pérez, who took up the sport at age 70 and trained while using a walking frame, according to regional sports authorities and community associations.
Remembering a Pioneer of Extremeñan Archery
Inés Pérez passed away, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the regional archery circuit. Known for her tenacity and enthusiasm, Pérez defied physical obstacles to train regularly with the Federación Extremeña de Tiro con Arco. Raquel de San Macario, president of the regional federation, remembered her as a constant and courageous presence who never missed a training session despite mobility limitations that required a walking frame. “She shot while sitting down and learned at 70 years old,” de San Macario stated in public tributes shared by the federation.
Dedication to Social Projects and Breast Cancer Advocacy
Beyond her athletic pursuits, Pérez maintained a deep involvement with the Asociación Oncológica Extremeña (AOEX), serving on its board of directors and dedicating over a decade to social support initiatives after having an operation for breast cancer. Montaña Ortega, an AOEX delegate and close friend who knew Pérez for 14 years, described her as a supportive figure who acted like an older sister within the organization. Pérez was heavily involved in the “Arco y Salud” (Archery and Health) project, attending sessions every Friday, and played an instrumental role in the initiative known as “Flechas Rosas contra el cáncer de mama” (Pink Arrows against Breast Cancer).
The Future of the ‘Flechas Rosas’ Initiative
The “Flechas Rosas” campaign, organized collaboratively by the Extremadura Archery Federation and AOEX every October to raise awareness during breast cancer awareness month, carries heightened emotional weight following Pérez’s passing. Organizers confirmed that the upcoming fifth edition of the solidarity tournament and open house days will serve as a tribute to her memory. Regional entities, including the Diputación de Cáceres and the Junta de Extremadura, actively collaborate with the program, which federation leaders vow will continue to embody Pérez’s resilience, athletic spirit, and commitment to the community.
