An abandoned Labrador retriever mix found tied to a road sign in the Plzeň region of the Czech Republic with a handwritten farewell note and 500 crowns has secured a new home following a mandatory quarantine period, according to local animal rescue officials.

The incident, which occurred in late July, brought renewed attention to animal abandonment issues following a similar case earlier this summer in southern Bohemia. Andrea Gašparec, chairwoman of the U Františka animal rescue group, stated that the dog—named Daška—was discovered near a roadside in good physical condition.
Wire, a note, and 500 crowns
“We found Daška in the evening by the road, tied with wire to a traffic sign,” Gašparec told reporters, adding that the animal had completed its required quarantine and health checks.
Attached to the dog was a sum of 500 Czech crowns alongside a farewell letter written by the former owner. According to rescue organizers, the previous owner explained in the letter that she could no longer care for Daška because she owned several other dogs.
High energy and a September adoption
“She wrote in it that she couldn’t manage to care for Daška because she has other dogs,” Gašparec said. Rescuers described the canine as intelligent, cheerful, and possessing a high-energy temperament typical of Labrador mixes that requires regular mental and physical engagement.
Following public appeals and evaluation by the shelter, local caretakers successfully matched the dog with an adoptive family. Representatives for the rescue organization confirmed that prospective owners have already begun visiting the animal and plan to take her home permanently during September.
Echoes of an earlier abandonment in Tábor
The episode follows a comparable abandonment reported in June in the southern Bohemian town of Tábor, where a roughly 40-kilogram dog was tied to a handrail. In that instance, the animal was left with dog food, a blanket, and an informational note detailing its background. Local authorities noted that the Tábor dog, named Manny, experienced severe stress and required sedation before municipal police officers transferred him to a local municipal shelter.
