The German women’s national basketball team fell 68-62 to Hungary in Göttingen, dropping its second preparation match ahead of the upcoming Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin. Guard Alexis Peterson led the scoring effort for the hosts with 18 points, but a sluggish offensive start and a difficult third quarter left the team scrambling to close a 14-deficit late in the contest.
Offensive Struggles and a Third-Quarter Slump
Playing in front of home supporters in Göttingen, the German squad struggled to find an offensive rhythm through the first two quarters, managing just 25 points before halftime to trail 26-25 at the break. The situation worsened significantly in the third period, where turnovers mounted and allowed Hungary to pull away and establish a commanding 14-point advantage heading into the final stanza. Despite mounting a strong fourth-quarter comeback fueled by defensive intensity that narrowed the gap to just two points, the hosts could not complete the turnaround.
Coaching Dynamics and Roster Adjustments
Olaf Lange joined the team directly from the airport to direct his first preparation game of the summer. Lange had missed the initial phase of training camp due to coaching commitments as an assistant with the WNBA franchise Toronto Tempo. The roster also continued to navigate the absence of several key players currently competing in the United States, including Leonie Fiebich, Nyara Sabally, and Frieda Bühner.

There was positive news regarding Fiebich, who returned to action for the New York Liberty following a multi-week absence due to a foot injury, scoring 20 points in a win against the Indiana Fever. Conversely, the status of Nyara Sabally remains uncertain due to calf issues, while Satou Sabally has already been ruled out of the World Cup following her second concussion in a short period.
Road to Berlin and Upcoming Tests
Germany now shifts its focus to its final preparation fixture, scheduled for Thursday in Cologne against Turkey. Following that matchup, the team will travel to Berlin for the Women’s Basketball World Cup, which runs from September 4 to September 13. In the group stage of the tournament, the German side will face Spain, Japan, and Mali.
