Four individuals remain in custody following the killing of 38-year-old Zolani Tete, who was shot dead outside his home in NU 17, Mdantsane on Thursday, August 21. Eastern Cape law enforcement moved swiftly in the wake of the shooting, apprehending multiple suspects over the weekend. A 22-year-old suspect arrested in KuGompo City has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder, with the latter charge stemming from injuries sustained by a 27-year-old female passenger who was travelling with the boxer and remains hospitalised.
The charged 22-year-old is scheduled to make his initial court appearance at the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 24. Three additional suspects—two aged 27 and one aged 28—were taken into custody on Sunday, August 23, following arrests across Mdantsane and Scenery Park. Two of these later suspects face preliminary charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, while authorities evaluate further charges related to the shooting itself.
Police Investigation and Witness Status
The investigation saw an initial five apprehensions before provincial police adjusted the figures following questioning. A 30-year-old man detained alongside the primary 22-year-old suspect in KuGompo City on Saturday was subsequently released after investigators determined there were insufficient grounds to keep him detained. According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, that individual is now treated as a potential witness as inquiries proceed.

Police officials have cautioned both the public and media outlets against speculation or spreading unverified information, warning that premature disclosures risk compromising both the ongoing police work and subsequent court proceedings. South African Police Service leadership formally commended the investigative team for their swift apprehension of the suspects within hours of the incident.
Tributes and Boxing Legacy
The fatal ambush occurred as Tete sat in his vehicle waiting for his home gate to open, when two armed suspects wearing balaclavas emerged from another car and opened fire. The sudden loss of the celebrated boxer sent shockwaves through the sporting world, drawing immediate reactions from government officials and boxing figures. South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie paid tribute to the fallen athlete, stating that South Africa has lost one of the finest fighters it has ever produced.
Former Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula similarly lamented the tragedy, remembering Tete as a great South African who has made an immense contribution in the sport of boxing. Tete captured the WBO bantamweight title between 2017 and 2019 and previously held the IBF super-flyweight crown in 2014, compiling a professional record of 29 wins from 34 fights. His career highlights included a Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a title fight, finishing Siboniso Gonya in just 11 seconds in 2017. Manager Mla Tengimfene confirmed that Tete had been actively training for a sporting comeback following the expiration of a four-year doping ban in July.
