Former world and European canoeing champion Gábor Dudás has died at the age of 42, according to reports from Hungarian media outlets.
Budapest Police Launch Investigation Following Discovery
According to reporting from the Budapest police and local news services such as Telex, law enforcement officials secured an entire residential building in the Hungarian capital following the discovery of the former champion’s body. Investigators conducted a thorough on-site examination, and local authorities have formally opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. No unauthorized personnel were permitted to enter the building while forensic teams processed the scene.
Athletic Career Defined by Major Titles and Doping Suspension
Dudás enjoyed significant success on the international water sports stage, highlighted by a world championship gold medal won in 2014 as part of Hungary’s K1 relay team. He added another major victory the following year at the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. Following a positive test for a prohibited hormonal substance, the International Canoe Federation and national anti-doping authorities disqualified him from the event and handed him a 34-month suspension from the sport.
Despite the severe penalty, Dudás mounted a competitive return to the sport in 2018. He claimed a bronze medal at both the European and World Championships in the K4 500-meter category before ultimately retiring from competitive canoeing in 2021.
