The agreement successfully revives negotiations that fell apart during the closing hours of the winter transfer window. McNeil had previously passed a medical and agreed to personal terms on a loan deal with a £20 million obligation to buy, only for the transfer to abort at the 11th hour because required paperwork could not be submitted to the league in time.
The breakdown of that initial move prompted public frustration. McNeil’s partner, Megan Sharpley, posted a lengthy statement on Instagram criticizing the handling of the situation.
“To have something promised to you, to have been dragged along on an emotional rollercoaster and to be toyed with until the final minute. For that to be torn away from you at the last second with absolutely no explanation has hurt more than I can say.”

McNeil departs Everton after four seasons following his arrival from Burnley in July 2022 for £20m. The 26-year-old made 128 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 goals and providing 19 assists, but entered the final year of his contract on Merseyside.
Johnson heads to Everton after a difficult seven-month spell in south London. Crystal Palace signed the Wales international from Tottenham Hotspur in January in a club-record £35million deal, but the 25-year-old failed to score in 26 appearances across all competitions for the Eagles.
Johnson previously starred under at Tottenham, where he finished the 2024-25 campaign as the club’s top scorer with 18 goals, including the winner in the Europa League final against Manchester United in May 2025.

Everton finished 13th in the Premier League table last season, while Crystal Palace finished two places below them in 15th but qualified for the Europa League by winning the UEFA Conference League.
