Sara Fantini secured the silver medal in the women’s hammer throw at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, according to reports from multiple outlets including Corriere della Sera and La Gazzetta dello Sport. Posting a mark of 74.35 meters on her opening attempt, the Italian athlete captured the fifth overall medal for the Italian team at the continental championships, building upon her previous bronze in Munich in 2022 and gold in Rome in 2024.
Fantini Opens Strong to Secure Continental Silver
The competition at the Alexander Stadium saw Finland’s Silja Kosonen claim the gold medal with a throw of 76.28 meters. Fantini’s first-round effort of 74.35 meters proved sufficient to hold off the rest of the field for second place, adding another international podium finish to her resume. Norway’s Beatrice Nedberge Llano took the bronze with 72.88 meters, while veteran competitor Anita Wlodarczyk finished fourth at 72.37 meters, as detailed by ANSA.
“I’m happy because the medal wasn’t a given at all,” Fantini said following the event, according to ANSA.
Track and Field Results: Folorunso and Pernici Shape the Day
In other track events during the third day of the championships, Ayomide Folorunso placed fifth in a fast-paced women’s 400-meter hurdles final, according to Corriere della Sera. Meanwhile, Francesco Pernici advanced to the 800-meter final with a time of 1:43.84 in the morning session, matching his second-best career performance following a national record set a month prior, per ANSA reports. Alessandro Sibilio also secured a spot in the 400-meter hurdles final by running a season-best 48.44 in his heat.
The Italian team experienced mixed results across qualification rounds. In the women’s 200 meters, Dalia Kaddari won her heat but missed out on the final as the first overall exclusion, while teammate Vittoria Fontana also exited in the semifinal stage. In the men’s triple jump, Andy Diaz, Andrea Dallavalle, and Simone Biasutti advanced smoothly into the final without requiring excessive effort, according to ANSA.
Discus Qualifications and Next Session Schedule
The discus throw qualification proved challenging for the Italian contingent. National record holder Daisy Osakue finished 17th with a best throw of 57.41 meters, falling short of the 58.48-meter threshold required to reach the final. Benedetta Benedetti placed 19th with 55.72 meters, and teammate Emily Conte finished 26th with a mark of 52.18 meters.
