The deal brings Wahi back to French football after a frustrating period in the Bundesliga where his playing time dried up and he failed to find the back of the net in league play.

Wahi explained that his decision to return was swift and straightforward, despite holding discussions regarding alternative moves. When speaking to reporters during his official presentation, he used a direct comparison to characterize his bond with the club. “It’s like love at first sight, like when you look at a girl,” Wahi said, as reported by outlets covering the press conference. He added that the connection felt entirely natural, smoothing the path for negotiations that ultimately sidelined interest from other European suitors.

Weighing Offers and Rejecting Suitors

Before finalizing his return to the Gym, Wahi drew attention from several other clubs across the continent. Reports from French media indicated that both Serie A side Lazio and English club Hull City made approaches to secure the striker during the transfer window. However, the player maintained that his preference was locked in early.

“In my head, it was pretty clear from the start,” Wahi remarked, acknowledging that he kept in regular contact throughout the summer with Roger Ricort, the sporting director of OGC Nice. Choosing stability over another adaptation period abroad proved decisive for the young forward, who admitted a reluctance to uproot his career once again following his departure from Germany.

Turning the Page on a Difficult German Chapter

The contrast between Wahi’s struggles abroad and his prior impact in France remains stark. During his initial six-month loan spell with Nice, he proved instrumental in keeping the club in Ligue 1, netting nine goals and providing two assists across 19 appearances, which included a memorable brace against Strasbourg in the Coupe de France semi-finals and another crucial double in the relegation playoff against Saint-Étienne.

In contrast, his time at Eintracht Frankfurt yielded virtually no offensive production in the Bundesliga, restricted largely to a single goal against a lower-division side in a cup fixture. Addressing his exit from the German club, Wahi adopted a pragmatic stance without directing criticism at the coaching staff. “We had to discuss it. I think it didn’t necessarily come from the coach. These are decisions you have to accept as a football player, and I wish them a very good season,” he stated.

A Rock Star Welcome at Nice Airport

Supporters on the Côte d’Azur made sure their appreciation was loud and clear upon his arrival. Wahi was greeted by a large crowd of fans at Terminal 1 of Nice airport, turning a routine flight arrival into a public demonstration.

“When I landed, I went to the toilets and I heard noises, I was wondering what it was,” Wahi recalled of the scene. “Once I came out, I saw two or three looks and I understood right away.” He noted that the outpouring of messages on social media during preceding weeks had already signaled how much the fanbase valued his potential return.

Taking on New Leadership Responsibilities

Under the guidance of manager Olivier Pantaloni, whom Wahi described as deeply human and professional, the forward enters this second tenure with an elevated profile. Unlike his first brief stint, he now steps into the squad with a full season ahead of him and a clear expectation to lead the attacking line.

“I know I will be expected, but it is this kind of responsibility that I like and that I want to have,” Wahi said. Beyond his on-field duties, he expressed a desire to act as an older brother figure within a youthful squad, aiming to guide younger teammates as Nice tackles its domestic campaign.
