Charges and mental evaluation for Elijah Bieniemy

Mia Bieniemy, 57, was critically wounded in the shooting at the family home. Elijah Bieniemy was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. At a court hearing, a judge granted a request from his public defender for a mental evaluation after the lawyer wrote that Elijah Bieniemy appears to suffer from significant mental health issues and is currently unable to assist in his own defense.

According to an incident report obtained through a public records request, the July 24 call was made from the family’s address by a 27-year-old man who stated that his parents were withholding his weapons and that he is a certified UFC fighter so now he feels like he cannot defend himself. The caller also stated that his parents told him he had to surrender his firearms to remain in the home and refused to return them when he wanted to visit a shooting range. Police classified the response as a priority 3, indicating an urgent but not life-threatening situation.

Prior police responses at the family home

The July call was the last of at least three police responses to the home in the preceding two months. On June 1, deputies conducted a welfare check requested by a remote college counselor for a 27-year-old resident matching Elijah Bieniemy’s description, noting at the time that no one had access to weapons. A second incident report involving suspicious circumstances was filed by the sheriff’s office on June 22, with names redacted.

Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Thomas Julia stated that the matter remains an active criminal investigation. Meanwhile, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid stated that Mia Bieniemy was transferred out of the intensive care unit and continues to improve, while no timeline has been set for Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to return from home.
