Basketball world champion Dennis Schröder is moving to the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA, marking the twelfth franchise of his career since entering the league in 2013, according to reports confirmed by ESPN insider Shams Charania.
The Trade Details Between Cleveland and Charlotte
The Cleveland Cavaliers traded the 32-year-old point guard to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for 25-year-old Tre Mann and financial considerations, as reported by ESPN. Schröder enters his 14th NBA season having played for a vast array of franchises across the league. In Charlotte, he joins a roster that already features young Germans Hannes Steinbach and Christian Anderson, who signed following the June draft.
The move also reunites Schröder with Charles Lee, who is now trainer in Charlotte. The two previously crossed paths during Schröder’s initial stint in the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks. Last season, Schröder split time between the Sacramento Kings and the Cavaliers, appearing in 70 total games while averaging 10.8 points per contest. His season ended in the Conference Finals, where Cleveland was swept 0-4 by the eventual champion New York Knicks.
Chasing an NBA Longevity Milestone
With his arrival in Charlotte, Schröder moves one step closer to a unique NBA benchmark. According to league records, the record for playing for the most different franchises is held by Ish Smith, who suited up for 13 different teams before his career concluded in 2024. Schröder’s upcoming tenure with the Hornets puts him just one club away from matching that mark.
Over 13 seasons and 912 regular-season games—with various tracking sets noting up to 986 total appearances across different contexts—Schröder has maintained a career scoring average of 13.7 points per game. Throughout his career, he has played for the Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Aside from a multi-year run in Atlanta, Schröder has frequently been on the move, experiencing trades in four of his last five seasons.
International Duties Ahead of the New Season
He is currently in Germany, where he was named an honorary citizen of his hometown of Braunschweig. Beyond his on-court exploits, Schröder serves as the majority shareholder of the German Basketball Bundesliga club Basketball Löwen Braunschweig.
Schröder will travel to Hamburg on Monday to lead the German national team’s preparations for the upcoming Supercup. Following the tournament, the squad faces two World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands in Cologne on August 27, followed by another fixture in Poland three days later. The upcoming NBA regular season is scheduled to tip off on October 20, giving the veteran guard a packed schedule ahead of his debut in Charlotte.
