The 2026 season has marked a definitive career turning point for the young Spaniard. Barroso opened his international campaign with a gold medal at the Ibero-American Championships in Lima, Peru, before securing the national title at the Spanish Championships after defeating reigning distance pacesetter Mohamed Attaoui in a tactical sprint finish, as detailed by RTVE coverage.

“I knew I had to put as many meters as possible into Moha before the explosive change he has,” Barroso told RTVE regarding his championship strategy against Attaoui.
While Barroso previously recorded times hovering above 1:46 minutes during his victories in Lima and Málaga, his competitive trajectory shifted dramatically in the weeks leading up to the Birmingham European Championships. A breakthrough performance in Budapest yielded a 1:43.60 clocking, establishing the fourth-fastest continental mark of the season.

According to Barroso, a significant factor behind his elevated consistency—holding steady in the 1:44 and 1:43 range—has been his decision to relocate his training base back to his home town of Zafra. Returning to a familiar environment allowed him to reunite daily with his coach, José Ángel Rama, moving away from a previous remote training setup based in Seville.
“In Seville I trained alone. Now we can better adapt my workouts and pull the string a bit more if he sees me well or ease off otherwise,” Barroso explained to RTVE, emphasizing the impact of close daily oversight from his coaching team, family, and lifelong support network.
Vallehermoso Roots and the Birmingham Outlook
Reflecting on the foundations of his athletic motivation, Barroso points to an earlier milestone in his junior career. His first under-20 national medal at the Vallehermoso stadium served as a psychological shift, instilling the belief that he could excel at a high competitive level. He dedicated that formative achievement to his grandfather, who passed away shortly before the race.
As competition in Birmingham approaches, Barroso maintains a cautious yet ambitious tactical outlook. Rather than prematurely declaring victory in a deep 800-meter field that features established contenders like Attaoui, the Spanish champion has outlined a clear progression path for the international venue.
“In the European Championship, I am going to try to position myself more or less like in the Spanish one, in the privileged positions that we call, and if the strength accompanies, I should enter among the first,” Barroso stated. “I would like to pass to the final, that is the objective we have. Then in a final anything can happen and we will fight for the medals.”
