Dani Mérida advanced to his first career ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinals by defeating the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets at the Montreal, turning around a career-wide winless record on hard courts.

Dani Mérida arrived in Montreal searching for his first tour-level victory on a hard court. Four matches later, the Spaniard stands among the last eight players at a Masters 1000 event. Mérida dispatched Griekspoor 6-3, 6-1 in just 69 minutes during their fourth-round clash, sealing a breakthrough performance that guarantees his debut inside the ATP top 50 rankings.
Entering the tournament ranked No. 63 in the world, Mérida is projected to climb to at least No. 40 when the updated rankings are released. His run in Canada features four consecutive hard-court victories, highlighted by a straight-sets win over France’s Ugo Humbert, who was previously the highest-ranked opponent Mérida had ever beaten.
“I came here without any wins on hard courts, but I knew I had the level to compete against these guys, in these types of scenarios,” Mérida said in his on-court post-match interview, expressing total focus ahead of his next test.
Clinical Serving and Dominant Numbers Against Griekspoor
The Madrid native played his cleanest, most authoritative match of the week against Griekspoor. Mérida dictated play from the baseline and neutralized his opponent’s serve, converting 83 percent of his first-serve points and 67 percent of his second-serve points.
The turning point in the opening set arrived in the fifth game, when Mérida broke Griekspoor’s serve to establish control. He added a second break—winning it to love—when Griekspoor served to stay in the set at 5-3 down.
The second set proved even more one-sided. Mérida swept the first five games before closing out the match 6-1. Statistical sheets underlined the lopsided nature of the contest: Mérida struck 16 winners against just 9 unforced errors. Griekspoor managed 9 winners while committing 25 unforced errors, a tally that included six double faults as the Dutch player struggled to find a foothold in the rallies.
What Comes Next in the Canadian Draw
With a spot in the quarterfinals secured, Mérida awaits the winner of the fourth-round encounter between American Learner Tien and Argentina’s Thiago Agustín Tirante.
Mérida is not the only Spanish player making a deep run in Canada this week. Fellow Spaniard Rafa Jódar also advanced to the quarterfinals following a victory over Czech player Jiri Lehecka. Because Mérida and Jódar occupy opposite halves of the tournament bracket, the two players can only meet in a hypothetical final.
