Transport Modes and New Risks
When examining how children were traveling at the time of accidents, federal data highlights automobiles and bicycles as the primary environments for severe harm. The number of children killed while riding as passengers in cars grew from 21 to 31. Fatalities among young cyclists increased from 8 to 13. Furthermore, the federal statistical office recorded four fatalities involving children on E-scooters, marking the first time such deaths appeared in the annual traffic safety compilation after registering zero cases previously.
Peak Danger Hours on the School Commute
Analysis of weekly travel patterns indicates that the morning commute represents a particularly high-risk window for school-aged children. For minors aged six to 14, Mondays through Fridays between 7:00 and 8:00 AM account for 12 percent of all traffic casualties within that demographic. This surge coincides directly with the morning school run. Accident frequencies decrease during the late morning before rising again in afternoon dismissal windows, specifically between 1:00 and 2:00 PM, 3:00 and 4:00 PM, and 4:00 and 5:00 PM, each accounting for 9 percent of incidents.
Overall Distribution of Child Traffic Casualties
Across all recorded traffic incidents involving minors, bicycles accounted for the largest share of accidents at 34 percent. Children traveling as vehicle passengers constituted 31 percent of cases, pedestrians made up 20 percent, and E-scooter riders represented 8 percent of the total recorded casualties.
