Former UFC title challenger Anthony Smith was arrested in Nebraska on three felony charges, including domestic violence and terroristic threats, following an alleged altercation in Gretna. Smith was released on a $500,000 bond as his management and wife released statements addressing the ongoing legal proceedings.
The 38-year-old fighter, who retired from active UFC competition in April 2025 after a nine-year run with the promotion, was booked into the Sarpy County Jail on Monday night.

According to the Sarpy County Attorney’s Office, Smith faces three distinct felony counts: attempt to commit first-degree domestic abuse, terroristic threats, and first-degree false imprisonment. John W. Reisz, Chief Deputy Sarpy County Attorney, detailed the statutory penalties to TMZ Sports, noting that the domestic violence charge alone carries a potential prison sentence of one to 50 years. The terroristic threats charge carries a penalty of zero to three years behind bars, a $10,000 fine, and post-release supervision, while the false imprisonment count carries up to three years.

Court documents and prosecutor statements indicate that the altercation began at a bar in Gretna, where Smith allegedly threatened to kill his wife if she did not return home with him, before pushing her into a vehicle. Investigators stated that when the victim escaped during the drive, Smith attempted to strike her with the vehicle multiple times, though she maneuvered out of the way and avoided physical harm. Courtroom video from KETV7 also captured discussions regarding reports of gunshots at the home and alleged threats of self-harm. Smith later turned himself in to authorities.
Smith secured his release from custody Wednesday morning after posting a $500,000 bond at the Sarpy County Correctional Center. As conditions of his release, a judge barred him from any contact with his wife and prohibited him from leaving Nebraska without judicial permission. He is scheduled to return to court on August 17.

Brian Butler of SuckerPunch Entertainment, Smith’s manager, released formal statements asking the public to withhold judgment while the legal process unfolds. Butler emphasized the presumption of innocence afforded under the justice system.
“We are aware of the reports concerning Anthony Smith’s recent arrest. At this time, it would be inappropriate to comment on the allegations or speculate regarding facts that have yet to be fully established. Like every individual, Anthony is entitled to the presumption of innocence and the due process protections afforded under our justice system. We respectfully ask that people avoid rushing to judgment based solely on initial reports, as they often do not reflect the complete facts or context.”

Butler also shared a message attributed to Smith’s wife, Mikhala, via her private Instagram account. The statement characterized the episode as an acute mental health crisis rather than a malicious assault, asserting that she called for help to protect her husband.
“There’s not a lot I can say right now. I love Anthony with every ounce of my being! He is a good man, a great dad, and an incredible husband who loves us endlessly. Anyone that knows him can attest to that. They made a mental health struggle into something it wasn’t. I am safe and always was safe. He would never hurt me. Ever. I called for help to protect him from himself.”
UFC CEO Dana White addressed the situation during an interview with The Mac Life, noting that the news came as a surprise given Smith’s professional standing and broadcasting role with the promotion.
