Alessandro Terrazzini, 18, from Carbonate, Como, died in a road accident during the early hours of Monday, August 10, while riding his motorcycle toward the Adriatic coast to join friends for a summer vacation. The tragedy, which occurred in Masone, a fraction of Reggio Emilia, has left the regional athletic community, local educational institutions, and the Italian baseball federation in mourning.
According to reporting from MilanoToday and VareseNews, the fatal crash took place around 4 a.m. along the via Emilia in the direction of Modena. Terrazzini was traveling on his Zontes 125 scooter along ordinary and extraurbane roads when, for reasons still under investigation by local law enforcement, he lost control of the vehicle. The scooter crossed the opposing lane, exited the roadway, and struck the perimeter fence of the Cantina Sociale Masone-Campogalliano.
Emergency responders from the 118 service arrived rapidly at the scene with an ambulance and a medical car, as detailed by VareseNews. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by the medical personnel, the impact proved fatal, and the young athlete was pronounced dead at the scene.
Impact on the Italian Baseball Community
Terrazzini was a baseball player in the Lombardy circuit. Having celebrated his 18th birthday at the beginning of the summer, he had played across multiple clubs and disciplines.
The Italian Baseball and Softball Federation released a formal statement acknowledging the loss: “A new, tragic mourning has struck the entire world of Italian baseball.”
Locally, Terrazzini grew up within the ASD Varese Hornets 2018 baseball and softball organization, progressing through youth categories from U12, U15, and U18 to making his debut in Serie C. Beyond traditional baseball, he competed in the Baseball5 format, participating in the Città di Tradate tournament and representing his club in the first Italian Baseball5 Championship wearing the number 19 jersey. He also became a federal umpire, directing fixtures at events such as the Torneo delle Regioni in Sardinia and international tournaments in Aosta.
At the time of his passing, Terrazzini was playing on loan for Bollate Baseball’s Under-18 squad for the second year in a row, following previous loan stints with the ASD Braves of Lentate sul Seveso.
“With immense and profound sadness, we announce the passing of young Alessandro Terrazzini, an athlete of the Hornets, on loan to our Under-18 team,” Bollate Baseball stated in a public message. “All of Bollate Baseball unites in the pain of the family, that of our friends the Hornets, and that of his teammates.”
Educational Community and Funeral Arrangements
Outside of sports, Terrazzini was an apprentice in the mechanical training course at the IAL vocational training center in Saronno. Faculty members, administrators, and student peers expressed sorrow over the loss of a student who had spent formative years within the institute.
“The IAL Saronno community unites in pain for the premature passing of Alessandro Terrazzini, our mechanical apprentice,” the school stated. “Alessandro shared an important stretch of his growth journey with us, and today our thoughts go to his family, his loved ones, his peers, and all the people who were close to him.”
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, August 13, at 4:30 p.m. at the church in Carbonate, where family members, teammates, and community members are expected to gather to pay their final respects.
