The Detroit Red Wings relieved Steve Yzerman of his duties as general manager and executive vice president on July 15, 2026. Yzerman, who led the team to a 224-251-9 record over seven seasons, will transition to a senior adviser role for CEO Chris Ilitch as the franchise begins a search for new leadership.
Management Transition and the Search for New Leadership
The organization announced the shift in leadership on Wednesday, ending Yzerman’s tenure as the primary decision-maker for hockey operations. Hired on April 19, 2019, Yzerman oversaw a period defined by a difficult rebuild, during which the team failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Despite showing incremental improvements in points percentage in recent seasons—reaching .561 last year—the team finished seven points outside of playoff contention.

CEO Chris Ilitch indicated that the search for a new general manager will consider both internal and external candidates. In a statement, Ilitch acknowledged the need for a change, stating, Clearly, we are not where we and our fans expect to be as an organization.
“I’m looking forward to bringing in new leadership to build the championship-caliber organization Hockeytown deserves.”

Dylan Larkin’s Trade Request and Future Status
Larkin, 29, requested a trade earlier this summer, a development that became public on June 4.
Larkin is signed through the 2030-31 season on an eight-year, $69.6 million contract with an average annual value of $8.7 million. While he has expressed interest in moving to contenders such as the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, or Florida Panthers, no move materialized under Yzerman’s watch.
Yzerman’s Legacy and Shift to Advisory Role
While Yzerman’s time as general manager concluded without a playoff appearance, his history with the franchise remains a central pillar of his identity in Detroit. A three-time Stanley Cup champion as a player, his number 19 is retired by the club. He will remain with the organization as a senior adviser to Chris Ilitch.
“This organization has given me incredible opportunities, from my time as a player to the privilege of returning as general manager. I’ve appreciated every experience throughout the years, and I’m extremely proud to remain part of this great franchise.”

The transition arrives shortly after the club’s recent roster adjustments, including the July 1 signing of forward Viktor Arvidsson to a two-year, $10 million contract. As the organization pivots toward its next chapter, the primary challenge remains the same: closing the gap between the team’s current performance and the standard established during the franchise’s 25-season playoff streak that ended in 2016.
