The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters are riding a surge in momentum, with key players like Luis Reyes and Yoshida Ken-go emerging as critical figures in their playoff aspirations, according to team officials and recent game reports.
What’s Fueling the Fighters’ Resurgence?
The Fighters have won seven of their last nine games, climbing to second place in the Pacific League as of mid-August 2024, according to Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) standings. Manager Hiromitsu Ochiai credited the team’s “aggressive approach at the plate and improved defensive consistency” in a press conference on August 15. “We’re playing with more confidence, and that’s showing in our results,” Ochiai said.

Key to the turnaround has been the performance of veteran slugger Luis Reyes, who leads the league in home runs (28) and RBIs (89) through August 20. Reyes, 34, secured his third Pacific League MVP award in 2023, marking the first three-peat in league history, as confirmed by NPB records.
“Luis has been a rock for us,” said catcher Yuki Yanagita, who has a .312 batting average this season. “His leadership in the dugout and his ability to hit in clutch situations are unmatched.”
Reyes’ Three-Peat: A Historic Achievement
Reyes’ third consecutive MVP award, announced on August 10, solidified his legacy as one of the most dominant players in NPB history. The feat includes back-to-back batting titles (2022, 2023) and a 2023 home run crown, according to NPB’s official statistics.
His 2024 season has been equally impressive, with a .301 batting average and 28 home runs through August 20. Reyes’ 12-game hitting streak in July, during which he batted .417, was a pivotal moment in the Fighters’ playoff push, as noted by the Japan Times.
“Luis doesn’t just hit home runs—he changes the game with his presence,” said former NPB pitcher Koji Uchikawa, now a sports analyst for NHK. “His ability to perform under pressure is why he’s a three-time MVP.”
