MLBPA Negotiations Stall Over 2028 Olympic Participation Terms
Major League Baseball players hoping to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics face ongoing uncertainty as negotiations between the league and the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) have hit a stalemate. While MLB team owners have expressed support for allowing big-league players to participate in the Games for the first time, disagreements regarding the logistical and legal framework of the tournament have complicated the path forward.

The Core Points of Contention
According to reports, the primary obstacles involve a complex set of demands concerning the treatment of players during the mid-season break. The league’s proposed mandatory-participation agreement, which would govern player conduct during the Olympic window, is a significant sticking point. Under the current league proposal, players who fail to meet specific requirements between July 12 and August 3, 2028, would be placed on the restricted list, resulting in a loss of both pay and service time. Beyond the participation agreement, the MLBPA has identified several other areas of concern, including: * Logistics: Disputes over hotel room arrangements and ticket allocations. * Financial Protection: Concerns regarding insurance coverage and the potential loss of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights. * Compensation: The union is seeking fair treatment for members, arguing that players provide substantial financial value to the LA28 Games. Ian Penny, a top lawyer and special advisor at the MLBPA, stated in a June 26 email that the union’s proposals are designed to prevent players from losing money through expenses or the forfeiture of commercial rights. Penny characterized the union’s requests as “modest and imminently reasonable,” particularly in light of the financial benefits flowing to non-athlete stakeholders involved in the Olympics.
Seeking a Precedent
The MLBPA is advocating for an agreement modeled after the deal struck between the International Olympic Committee, the National Hockey League (NHL), and the NHLPA. That agreement facilitated the return of professional hockey players to the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Games following a 12-year absence. In response to the union’s position, Niccolò Campriani, the vice president of sports for LA28, indicated in an email that the committee remains open to discussing implementation details and working through outstanding issues. Campriani maintained that the current package appropriately balances the various interests involved, adding that no other league is receiving more favorable terms.
Olympic Scheduling and Player Enthusiasm
The inclusion of baseball in the 2028 Games marks its return to the Olympic lineup after being excluded from the 2024 Paris Olympics. The tournament is structured as a six-team event scheduled for July 15–20 at Dodger Stadium. To accommodate the Games, MLB has proposed an 11-day pause in the 2028 season, which would also include the annual All-Star Game. The proposed 2028 mid-season schedule is as follows: * July 9: First half of the MLB season concludes. * July 10: Home Run Derby. * July 11: All-Star Game. * July 13: Olympic baseball tournament begins. * July 19: Medal games. * July 21: MLB season resumes. Despite the administrative hurdles, there is notable enthusiasm among players to participate. Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper, a vocal advocate for the inclusion of major leaguers in the Olympics, expressed his desire to represent the United States. “If I have an opportunity to put the American flag and USA on my chest again at the level of the Olympics, it would mean everything to me,” Harper said.
Path to Resolution
While the negotiations have yet to yield a formal proposal from the MLBPA, stakeholders note that there is still time to reach an agreement. The United States, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic have already secured bids for the six-team baseball tournament. As the host country, the U.S. receives an automatic entry. Whether those teams will feature the league’s top talent remains dependent on the outcome of the ongoing talks between the league and the players’ union.
