The University of Michigan Board of Regents is scheduled to convene this Thursday, with multiple reports indicating that the status of Athletics Director Warde Manuel will be a central topic of discussion. The board authorized the independent investigation in December 2024 to conduct an “open-ended” review of the athletics department. University president Domenico Grasso confirmed the investigation would expand into “an independent evaluation of culture, conduct and procedures throughout our athletics department.”

While the university has remained tight-lipped regarding the specific findings, a spokesperson confirmed to the Free Press on Sunday that there are “no plans as of now to release any Jenner & Block materials this week.” Despite the lack of an official agenda for the meeting, the pressure on Manuel has intensified. Reports from ESPN’s Dan Wetzel indicate that the results of the investigation are expected to be made public this week.

Sherrone Moore Termination Triggers Legal Action and University Review

The investigation’s scope expanded significantly beyond the initial inquiry into whether anyone in the department knew about the relationship between former football coach Sherrone Moore and assistant Paige Shiver, a violation of the university’s code of conduct regarding “Supervisor-Employee Relationships.” The investigation also looked into the handling of the original investigation of Moore. Grasso previously stated the school would “act swiftly” if the investigation produced findings that warranted additional terminations.

“We will leave no stone unturned, and any further action we take will be based on credible evidence and findings, developed through a rigorous investigation,” Grasso said in a December video statement.

Manuel fired Moore on Dec. 10 after evidence of an inappropriate relationship was brought to the department that morning. Moore was arrested later that day after he entered the home of Shiver. He was charged with felony home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering. Shiver, 32, said she endured “years of manipulation, harassment and exploitation” from Moore and that the university failed to protect its employee. Shiver’s lawyers said in March that she believes strongly that she was failed by the university. A separate lawsuit filed by an ex-Sherrone Moore aide alleges that the school is hiding public records related to the case.

Manuel signed a five-year extension as athletic director in December 2024, taking his tenure through June 2030, with an average annual compensation of $1.9 million. According to his contract obtained by the Free Press through a Freedom of Information Act request, a buyout would require 36 months of severance pay unless a settlement is reached.

His tenure has been marked by both high-level athletic success and frequent institutional turbulence. Manuel has overseen two major national titles, with Michigan college football taking home the championship in 2023 and men’s basketball winning the NCAA title in 2026. However, after both titles, Manuel failed to keep either head coach from heading to the pros, as Jim Harbaugh left to join the Los Angeles Chargers and basketball coach Dusty May left Ann Arbor to coach the Dallas Mavericks. Following Moore’s firing, Kyle Whittingham was hired as the football team’s new head coach.

Next Steps for Michigan Athletics

As the university approaches the Thursday meeting, the status of the department remains in flux. On Sunday, it was reported by Justin Spiro that Michigan had already decided to move on from Manuel and was currently negotiating the terms of his release. Other reports, including those from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, state that Manuel’s future is “in doubt” and that the decision is potentially related to the findings from the investigation. The outcome of the Board of Regents meeting is expected to clarify whether the university will proceed with a leadership change or retain Manuel despite the findings of the Jenner & Block investigation.
