Palo Alto Police Department records show that dispatch received a call regarding a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Alma Street and Hamilton Avenue near Stanford University at 6:13 p.m. on July 14, with Palo Alto police and fire units responding to the scene. Paramedics transported Shanahan to a local hospital where he spent most of the day before being released. Authorities confirmed that neither driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and no citations were issued to either party.

In the wake of the accident, medical evaluations revealed that Shanahan suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, and a severe concussion, alongside requiring more than 40 stitches in his face.
