Jakob Ingebrigtsen Confirms Return to Competition at Birmingham European Championships

Jakob Ingebrigtsen will make his long-awaited return to competitive athletics in mid-August at the European Championships in Birmingham, ending a nearly year-long injury layoff following Achilles tendon surgery in early 2026. Norwegian media outlets first reported the comeback before the athlete confirmed his entry on social media ahead of the registration deadline.

Espen Skoland, a spokesperson for Ingebrigtsen, confirmed the entry to the Norwegian news agency NTB. «I can confirm that he is going to run. He is looking forward to returning. It is a great relief and he is very excited,» Skoland said.

The reigning Olympic champion in the 5,000 meters plans to contest that distance in Birmingham, opting against doubling in the 1,500 meters. The 1,500-meter event serves as his other outdoor specialty, where he captured gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games and holds the current continental title.

Ingebrigtsen signaled his return on Instagram by sharing a video montage featuring rehabilitation footage and past championships, accompanied by a brief caption: «I heard Birmingham is nice this time of year…»

The Road to Recovery After Achilles Surgery

Birmingham will mark the first major test for the Norwegian runner after an eighteen-month physical struggle. His recent injury setbacks began shortly after he claimed a double title in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn in March 2025.

Persistent Achilles tendon trouble sidelined him throughout the summer meet circuit. He arrived at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last September without adequate race sharpness, finishing tenth in the 5,000-meter final and bowing out in the 1,500-meter preliminary heats. Following the world championships, he underwent corrective surgery in the United States.

Throughout his recovery, Ingebrigtsen shared training updates on social media without committing to a specific return date. Observers speculated about possible appearances at Diamond League meetings in Monaco and London during July, but he skipped both events as well as the Norwegian Championships.

Chasing More Continental Gold in Birmingham

Ingebrigtsen will head straight to the starting line for the 5,000-meter final, which stands as one of the opening events of the European Championships on August 10. He enters the meet aiming for his fourteenth overall continental title and his seventh outdoors.

His extensive championship record includes three consecutive distance doubles in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters at Berlin 2018, Munich 2022, and Rome 2024. Indoors, he secured 1,500 and 3,000-meter titles at Torún 2021, Istanbul 2023, and Apeldoorn 2025, alongside a gold and silver in Glasgow 2019. Furthermore, his endurance resume features three European cross-country titles won in Dublin 2021, Piedmont 2022, and Antalya 2024.

The European Championships in Birmingham run from August 10.
