Chicago Cubs Select Cade Townsend with 23rd Pick
The Chicago Cubs set the tone of their 2026 draft with their first pick, selecting University of Mississippi right-hander Cade Townsend with the No. 23 overall selection. The investment in Townsend paved the way for the Cubs to hone in on pitching and scour the college ranks for the best fits. The club finished the draft with 21 total selections: 16 pitchers—consisting of 14 right-handers and two left-handers—two infielders, two catchers, and one outfielder.
“We set out what we wanted to accomplish, which was injecting the system with some potential impact bats while at the same time focusing quite a bit on some pitching volume and also pitching quality,” vice president of scouting Dan Kantrovitz said Sunday.
Cade Townsend Recalls SEC Tournament Performance Against Louisiana State University
The Townsend Profile and SEC Success
Cade Townsend’s journey to the first round included a standout freshman campaign where he was tasked with taking the ball in the semifinals of the SEC tournament. Despite dealing with an inconsistent tour, Townsend pitched into the fifth inning against Louisiana State University, blanking a potent lineup that would eventually win the national title. That performance, driven by his ability to fire multiple, high-spin breaking balls, served as the only time during the 2025 season that the Tigers were held scoreless.

“It just helped me understand that, man, I can pitch here and I can beat the best team,” Townsend said. “Ever since that game, I really had that mentality that I can pitch against anyone and I can pitch in every environment.”
Townsend, 21, is a draft-eligible sophomore from an SEC program. While he dealt with a shoulder injury earlier in the year, he convinced the Cubs to invest in his future with a strong finish. He compiled a 3.94 ERA across 14 starts, notching 88 strikeouts in 64 innings, fitting into a draft slot valued at nearly $4 million. He stated he felt a strong connection when he met with the Cubs during last month’s MLB Draft Combine in Phoenix.
“That’s what I was looking for — a good fit,” Townsend said on a video conference with reporters. “Didn’t care what the pick was. Didn’t care what the money was. I really just want a team.”
University of Mississippi Produces Two First-Round Picks
Historic First Round for Ole Miss
The selection of Townsend was part of a historic milestone for the University of Mississippi. For the first time in program history, two Rebels were selected in the first round of the same Major League Baseball Draft as Townsend and Taylor Rabe were both selected in the opening round. Townsend became the ninth first-round pick in program history, while Rabe was selected 30th overall by the Kansas City Royals seven picks later.
Townsend was a 2026 Golden Spikes Semifinalist and was named to the 2026 All-SEC Second Team. He led all Rebel starters during the 2026 regular season in ERA (3.81), opposing batting average (.218), fewest home runs allowed (9), and batters struck out looking (26). He finished the season with 12.38 strikeouts per nine innings, ranked sixth in the SEC, and a 1.20 WHIP, ranked 15th in the conference. Additionally, he put together three consecutive quality starts from April 4 to April 18.

Jed Hoyer Targets Pitching Depth in 2026 Draft
Draft Strategy and Organizational Context
The Cubs’ front office, led by Jed Hoyer and Dan Kantrovitz, has historically been successful with early draft picks since 2022, when they selected Cade Horton in the top ten. Following Horton, the organization focused on college hitters like Matt Shaw and Cam Smith. While mock drafts suggested the Cubs would return to the college hitter well in 2026, the club opted to prioritize pitching to reduce the organization’s pitching deficit.
The emphasis on arms was evident throughout the draft. As Kantrovitz indicated going into the event, the Cubs prioritized pitching as a target. The organization hopes that Townsend’s swing-and-miss stuff and the club’s infrastructure can put him on the fast track to Wrigley Field.
