Barcelona Metro L9 Sinkhole: Residents Still Displaced, Compensation Possible

Barcelona Government Pledges Compensation for L9 Metro Sinkhole Victims

Sílvia Paneque, the Counselor for Territory, Housing, and Ecological Transition, stated that the government will do “whatever is necessary” to compensate residents and business owners affected by a sinkhole caused by L9 metro construction in Barcelona. The announcement follows a week of displacement for residents of 93 apartments in the Sant Gervasi-la Bonanova neighborhood, who remain unable to return home until at least Friday, according to reports from TV3.

Government Commitment to Resident Indemnities

During an interview with the program Els matins de TV3, Counselor Sílvia Paneque addressed the ongoing crisis in the Sant Gervasi-la Bonanova district. Paneque did not rule out financial indemnities for those impacted by the ground collapse, which occurred during the expansion of the L9 metro line. When questioned specifically about compensation, Paneque affirmed the administration’s commitment to take all required steps to rectify the situation.

The Counselor emphasized that the affected citizens bear no fault for the incident. “It is evident that the neighbors have no responsibility,” Paneque said, grounding the government’s willingness to pay damages in the fact that the sinkhole was a direct result of public infrastructure works.

Evacuation Status in Sant Gervasi-la Bonanova

The scale of the displacement remains significant one week after the initial incident. A total of 93 apartments have been evacuated, leaving a substantial number of residents without access to their primary homes. Current estimates indicate that these residents will not be permitted to return to their properties until at least this coming Friday.

The disruption extends beyond residential housing. Local merchants and business owners in the neighborhood have also been affected by the structural instability and the resulting restrictions on movement and access to the area. These commercial entities are included in the group that Paneque indicated may receive compensation for lost income and operational disruptions.
