Yordan Alvarez hit a two-run walk-off home run in the ninth inning on Saturday night to lead the Houston Astros to a 10-8 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, snapping Tampa Bay’s nine-game winning streak.
Alvarez’s Historic Performance
Alvarez, who was named to his fourth All-Star team before the game, drove in six runs and homered twice. His walk-off blast off reliever Casey Legumina came with no outs in the ninth after Jose Altuve drew a walk. The home run was projected by Statcast to travel 424 feet.
The performance marked Alvarez’s 26th career multihomer game, moving him past Lance Berkman into second place on the team’s all-time list, behind Jeff Bagwell. Additionally, Alvarez became the only player in Major League history to record multiple walk-off home runs on July 4, having previously done so in 2022.
Beyond the final home run, Alvarez hit a two-run homer in the first inning, recorded an RBI single in the fifth, and hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh. He currently leads the American League with 29 home runs.
Astros Overcome Early Deficit
Houston trailed 7-2 in the fourth inning after starter Hunter Brown allowed a season-high seven runs over four innings. The Rays built their lead with home runs from Junior Caminero and Richie Palacios, as well as scoring in the third and fourth innings.
The Astros began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run by Yainer Diaz. Houston eventually tied the game in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on a sequence that included an RBI single by Zach Dezenzo. The Houston bullpen held the Rays to one run over the final innings, and Josh Hader earned the win.
The victory extends Houston’s winning streak on Independence Day to nine games, the third-longest such streak in Major League history.
