Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf Shine During Steelers Training Camp
The stellar offensive display came just a day after the first-team offense struggled to reach the end zone during competitive team drills. During Thursday’s practice, coach Mike McCarthy put 1:32 on the clock with the ball on the offense’s own 35-yard line and two timeouts, prompting Rodgers and Metcalf to take control.
Rodgers, who completed 7 of 10 passes during the session, connected with Metcalf on back-to-back hitch routes that generated two first downs and advanced the Steelers to the 10-yard line with 17 seconds remaining. The sequence culminated when Rodgers and Metcalf connected on a corner route in the end zone, with Metcalf going over rookie cornerback Daylen Everette for a spectacular catch.
Offensive Versatility and Expanding Target Distribution
Thursday’s practice offered a glimpse into McCarthy’s offense when run efficiently, highlighted by quick passes executed on time. Throughout the competition periods, Rodgers distributed the ball across the field to a wide array of weapons.

Will Howard’s Process and Rookie Development
Second-year quarterback Will Howard delivered a strong overall performance during the combo period—where only three to five players per side ran their concepts simultaneously. His highlight play featured a touchdown setup to Pine-Richland’s Levi Wentz, where Howard stared down the middle of the field, executed a slight pump fake that froze the defensive backs, and fired a deep ball to a wide-open Wentz.
However, Howard’s two-minute drill with the second-team offense ended abruptly. After completing passes to Robert Tonyan, Travis Homer, and Brandon Smith to reach the defense’s 35-yard line, Howard misread the scheme and threw into a crowd, resulting in an interception by second-year safety Sebastian Castro.
Following practice, Metcalf addressed his end-zone matchup against Everette, noting that he spoke with the young cornerback afterward to turn the play into a learning moment. Metcalf praised the rookie as a bright player who is going to play in the league for a long time.
Rodgers Addresses Future and McCarthy Era
As camp unfolds under McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers reiterated his timeline regarding his playing career. The four-time MVP stated that there is “zero debate” that the season will be his last, noting that he previously considered retiring after last year. Rodgers ultimately decided to return on a one-year deal signed in May after his wife suggested he could play one more year under McCarthy, with whom he previously won a Super Bowl in Green Bay.
