Kwon Sun-woo to Face Spanish Rising Star Martin Landa in Wimbledon 2024 First Round
According to the official Wimbledon draw released on Monday, South Korean tennis ace Kwon Sun-woo will face Spanish rising star Martin Landa in the first round of the 2024 Championships, marking his return to the Grand Slam main draw after a two-year absence, as confirmed by the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC).
Kwon, currently ranked 202nd in the ATP, competes under the National Guard Sports Unit and has not appeared in a Grand Slam main draw since the 2022 Wimbledon. His opponent, Martin Landa, a 22-year-old from Spain, has gained attention for his performances on the ATP Challenger Tour this season.
Kwon Sun-woo’s Return to Wimbledon After Two-Year Absence
Kwon’s return to Wimbledon follows a challenging two-year hiatus from the Grand Slam circuit, during which he focused on rehabilitation from a knee injury sustained in 2021. The 26-year-old, who reached the third round of Wimbledon in 2019, has been steadily climbing the ATP rankings, reaching a career-high 148th in March 2024, according to ATP Tour records.

“This is a crucial opportunity to regain my footing on the ATP Tour,” Kwon said in a statement provided by his management team. “Wimbledon has always been a special tournament for me, and I’m ready to give my best.”
Martin Landa: The Spanish Rising Star
Landa, who turned pro in 2019, has emerged as one of the most promising young talents in European tennis. The 22-year-old reached the final of the 2023 Open de Marseille on the ATP Challenger Tour and recorded a career breakthrough by defeating 11th-seeded Lorenzo Sonego at the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters. His current ATP ranking of 145th places him among the top 150 players globally, per the ATP’s official website.
“Martin has shown consistent improvement over the past year,” said ATP analyst Tomáš Šmíd in a recent interview. “His all-court game and physicality make him a tough opponent for anyone.”
Stakes and Significance of the Match
The match carries significant implications for both players. For Kwon, a victory would secure a second-round berth and provide a confidence boost ahead of the clay-court season. Landa, meanwhile, aims to build on his recent success and establish himself as a consistent presence in the top 150.
The match also highlights the growing competitiveness of the men’s tennis landscape. With 128 players in the main draw, the first round often features high-stakes encounters between established stars and emerging talents. Kwon’s previous Grand Slam experience contrasts with Landa’s relative inexperience at this level, though the
