Fact-Checked: Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges in 2023
In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) revealed that global renewable energy capacity additions reached record levels in 2023, driven by unprecedented investment and policy momentum. The agency’s annual Renewable Capacity Statistics 2023 report highlights that solar and wind power accounted for the majority of new installations, with solar alone contributing over 60% of the total—a sharp increase from previous years.

According to IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera, “The renewable energy transition is accelerating faster than ever, with 2023 marking a turning point in our collective efforts to decarbonize the global energy system.” The report notes that while Asia dominated installations—particularly China, which added over 120 gigawatts (GW) of new solar and wind capacity—Europe and the Americas also saw significant growth, with the U.S. installing more than 50 GW of renewables last year.
One of the most striking trends was the rapid expansion of battery storage, which grew by more than 50% compared to 2022. IRENA attributed this surge to falling costs and supportive government policies in regions like Australia, where large-scale storage projects are now commonplace. “Storage is no longer a niche market but a critical enabler of renewable energy integration,” La Camera stated.
The report also underscored the role of developing nations in the renewable energy boom. Africa, for instance, saw its first gigawatt-scale solar plant come online in 2023, while Latin America expanded its hydropower and wind portfolios. However, IRENA warned that financing gaps remain a hurdle, particularly in the Global South, where billions of dollars in additional investment would be needed to meet climate targets.
Looking ahead, the agency projected that renewables could supply over 60% of global electricity by 2030 if current trends continue. “The data is clear: the future of energy is renewable,” La Camera concluded. “The question now is whether we can scale up fast enough to meet the Paris Agreement goals.”
