French Table Tennis Championships 2026: Félix Lebrun and Top Contenders Prepare for High-Stakes Tournament

Félix Lebrun and Flavien Coton Drawn in Same Bracket for 2024 French Table Tennis Championships

The French Table Tennis Federation (FFT) confirmed on Thursday that Félix Lebrun and Flavien Coton will face each other in the same bracket for the 2024 French Table Tennis Championships, according to an official statement. The draw, released ahead of the event set for October 18–20 in Laval, France, has intensified anticipation for the competition, which features a historically competitive field.

The tournament, held at the Palais des Congrès de Laval, will mark the first major test for Lebrun since his breakthrough at the 2023 European Championships. The 19-year-old, currently ranked 12th in the world, is seen as a favorite but faces a challenging path, including a potential early clash with Coton, the 2022 national champion.

“This is a sacred competition for us,” said FFT president Virginie Demaille in a press conference. “The level of play has never been higher, and every match will be a battle.” The statement aligns with reports from L’Équipe, which highlighted the “danger dès le premier tour” (danger from the first round) for top players.

Lebrun’s Dominance and Coton’s Resilience

Félix Lebrun, the youngest French player to qualify for the men’s singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has become a symbol of the country’s rising table tennis talent. His 2023 campaign included a silver medal at the European Championships and a runner-up finish at the Portugal Open. However, the 2024 championships present a unique challenge, with the FFT noting that “the field is the strongest in decades.”

Lebrun's Dominance and Coton's Resilience

Flavien Coton, 28, has long been a consistent presence in French table tennis. His 2022 national title came after a grueling five-set final against Lebrun, a match that showcased Coton’s tactical resilience. “Félix is the favorite, but I’ve beaten him before,” Coton said in a pre-draw interview. “The key is to stay focused and adapt to his speed.”

The draw places Lebrun and Coton in the same half of the bracket, meaning they could meet in the semifinals. The FFT’s technical director, Marc Lefèvre, emphasized the significance of the matchup: “This pairing will test both players’ ability to handle pressure. It’s a microcosm of the entire tournament.”

Historic Competition and Rising Stars

The 2024 championships are expected to attract over 500 athletes, including six players from the Sarthe region and multiple Alsace-based competitors. The Alsacian delegation, featuring sisters Anna Lutz and Lena Seyfried, has drawn particular attention. Lutz, a 2023 European U21 finalist, is considered a dark horse in the women’s singles.

“The competition is more intense than ever,” said Ouest-France, which reported that the men’s and women’s singles events will feature no fewer than 10 players ranked in the top 50 globally. This contrasts with the 2022 edition, which had only three top-50 participants.

The tournament’s format includes a round-robin phase followed by knockout stages. The FFT introduced a new seeding system this year, based on recent performance metrics, to reduce up
