Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Despite Economic Challenges

According to the latest International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report, global renewable energy capacity additions reached a record high in 2023, with solar and wind leading the expansion. The report highlights that renewable energy now accounts for nearly 36% of the world’s total electricity generation, up from just 29% in 2020.

The surge in renewables was driven by China, which alone added over 150 gigawatts (GW) of new solar and wind capacity last year, accounting for nearly half of the global total.

“The transition to renewables is accelerating faster than many predicted,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “This shift is not just about energy—it’s about creating jobs, reducing emissions, and building resilience in the face of climate change.”

“Renewable energy is now the cheapest source of new power in most countries, and that trend is only strengthening.” — Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA)

In Europe, the European Union aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, with renewables playing a central role. The bloc’s REPowerEU plan seeks to replace Russian fossil fuel imports with 450 GW of additional renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade.

Meanwhile, the United States saw a 12% increase in renewable energy installations in 2023, with wind and solar together providing 13% of the country’s electricity. The Inflation Reduction Act has spurred significant investment, with over $369 billion allocated to clean energy initiatives since its passage.

However, challenges remain. The World Bank estimates that 800 million people worldwide still lack access to electricity, with many relying on expensive and polluting fuels. “The energy transition must be inclusive,” said David Malpass, former World Bank President. “We cannot leave anyone behind in the shift to clean energy.”

Looking ahead, IRENA projects that global renewable energy capacity could exceed 4,800 GW by 2024, driven by continued declines in technology costs and supportive policies. The agency warns, however, that much greater ambition is needed to meet the Paris Agreement goals.
