The Universidad Católica de Murcia (UCAM) has solidified its status as a powerhouse in Spanish higher education athletics, securing the top spot in the national university sports rankings for the fifteenth consecutive year. According to official university records, the institution concluded the 2026 season with a total of 170 medals, including 97 golds, 44 silvers, and 29 bronzes.
A Historic Run of Dominance
The 2026 campaign marks a significant milestone for the Murcia-based institution. By topping the general medal table once again, UCAM has now accumulated 1,982 total medals throughout its history in the national university championships. The university finished well ahead of its closest competitors, maintaining a margin of more than 100 medals over the second-place finisher, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, which earned 18 golds, 12 silvers, and 11 bronzes. The Universidad de Valencia followed in third place with 13 golds, 19 silvers, and 16 bronzes.
This year’s competitions, which were organized across various locations by Andalusian universities, saw UCAM students participate in a diverse array of disciplines. The program included traditional university sports such as athletics, basketball, handball, judo, karate, table tennis, archery, and volleyball, alongside specialized events like fencing, weightlifting, and orienteering. A notable addition to the university’s athletic portfolio this year was the sport of rowing, which saw the debut of the UCAM team featuring Olympic athlete Aleix García.
The Dual Career Model
The university’s consistent performance is rooted in its long-standing “Dual Career” model, which was established at the university’s inception during the 1996/1997 academic year. Designed to help athletes balance rigorous training schedules with academic requirements, the model was pioneered by UCAM founder José Luis Mendoza. One early success story of this initiative is the walker Juanma Molina, who successfully coordinated his academic path with an elite sports career that eventually included European and world championship medals, as well as two Olympic appearances. Today, Molina serves as a professor at the university and holds a doctorate in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences.
This philosophy has expanded significantly over the past 25 years. The university currently manages four primary clubs—the UCAM Murcia Club de Baloncesto, UCAM Murcia Club de Fútbol, UCAM Cartagena Tenis de Mesa, and UCAM Esports—while providing sponsorship and partnership support to nearly 30 additional clubs. Through these agreements, the university supports approximately 6,000 athletes, facilitating their ability to compete at high levels while pursuing university degrees.
Looking Toward the Future
As the 2026 academic and sports cycle concludes, the university continues to emphasize its role as a hub for both elite athletics and specialized academic training. The recent performance in the national championships reinforces the institution’s strategy of integrating high-performance sports into its broader educational mission. With 15 years of consecutive leadership in the national standings, UCAM remains the benchmark for university sports systems in Spain.
The next cycle of national university championships is expected to begin with the start of the 2026/2027 academic term.
