Bayer Leverkusen Rejects Álvaro Arbeloa, Seeks New Manager Amid Post-Alonso Uncertainty

German Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen have officially turned down a managerial offer for former Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa, according to multiple reports. The 43-year-old Spanish coach, who briefly led Real Madrid in 2026, was approached by Leverkusen as they seek a successor to departing manager Kasper Hjulmand. However, the Bundesliga club has opted to continue its search for a new leader, citing concerns over Arbeloa’s readiness for top-tier management.

The decision comes amid ongoing instability at Leverkusen following the departure of Xabi Alonso, who guided the club to a historic treble of Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup between 2022, and 2025. After Alonso’s exit, Erik ten Hag was appointed but was sacked just two games into the 2026-27 season. Hjulmand, who took over in January 2026, struggled to replicate Alonso’s success, leading to Leverkusen’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League and their participation in the Europa League for the first time in over a decade.

Arbeloa’s Bid for Bundesliga Role Falls Flat

Arbeloa, who spent 18 seasons at Real Madrid as a player and later served as a youth coach, was seen as a potential successor to Alonso due to his deep ties to Spanish football. His agents reportedly reached out to Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes and CEO Fernando Carro in late May 2026, hoping to follow the path of Xabi Alonso, who had previously led Leverkusen to a domestic double in 2024.

However, Leverkusen’s scouting department, which had monitored Arbeloa’s coaching career since his tenure with Real Madrid’s U19 team (2022-2025), concluded that he was not yet prepared for the demands of the Bundesliga. “Despite his experience, we believe Arbeloa has not reached the level required to lead us back to the pinnacle of German football,” a club statement said.

The rejection marks a significant setback for Arbeloa, who had expressed a desire to manage abroad after his 20-year association with Real Madrid. His brief stint as a first-team coach in January 2026 ended when José Mourinho was appointed as Real Madrid’s new manager, with Arbeloa stepping down in March 2026.

Spanish coach Carles Martínez, mentioned in unverified reports, is one name under consideration. However, no official confirmation has been made, and sources close to Leverkusen have declined to comment on the matter.
