Agit Kabayel Becomes World Heavyweight Champion After Usyk’s Withdrawal
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has awarded its heavyweight world title to German boxer Agit Kabayel following the withdrawal of Ukrainian champion Alexander Usyk, according to official statements.
Kabayel, 34, expressed his emotions in a statement released by the WBC, saying, “Words cannot describe what I am feeling.” The decision comes after Usyk, who held the WBC title, withdrew from the organization’s mandatory defense, prompting the sanctioning body to name Kabayel as the new champion. The move was confirmed by the WBC’s governing board on Monday.
Historical Significance: A Legacy Rekindled
Kabayel’s ascension to world champion is a milestone for German boxing, which has not produced a reigning heavyweight world titleholder since Schmeling’s reign. Schmeling, a national icon, held the title from 1930 to 1932 and again briefly in 1933, before losing to Joe Louis in a historic bout. The last German heavyweight to challenge for a world title was Manuel Charr in 2013, who lost to Wladimir Klitschko.

The Road to the Title: Kabayel’s Career and the WBC’s Decision
Kabayel, who competes out of Munich, has built a career as a consistent contender in the heavyweight division. The 34-year-old has a record of 28 wins (18 by knockout) and 6 losses, with a 75% stoppage rate. His path to the title was paved by a series of high-profile victories, including a 2022 win over former WBC title challenger Dillian Whyte.
The WBC’s decision followed Usyk’s withdrawal, which the Ukrainian champion attributed to “personal and professional circumstances.” Usyk, who has held multiple world titles across different weight classes, had been scheduled to defend his WBC belt against mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk (no relation) in late 2023. The fight was canceled after Usyk’s team cited “unforeseen challenges.”
A WBC spokesperson stated, “The organization has determined that Agit Kabayel meets the criteria for the vacant title. We look forward to supporting his campaign as the new champion.”
What This Means for the Heavyweight Division
The title change adds complexity to an already crowded heavyweight landscape. Usyk, who also holds the WBA (Super), IBF, and WBO titles, remains a dominant force in the division. However, his absence from the WBC has created a vacuum that Kabayel aims to fill.
“This is a significant opportunity for Kabayel,” said boxing analyst Mark Johnson, who covers the sport for ESPN. “He’s a proven fighter with a strong technical game. But the real test will be whether he can unify the titles or face the likes of Tyson Fury, who holds the WBO belt.”
Kabayel’s next move is expected to be a un
